Tourism in the North East

How it works

Tourism in the North East is made up of four independent organisations, or partners:  Northumberland Tourism, NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Visit County Durham and Tess Valley Unlimited (more detail below).

These partners work closely together, as well as with national and international tourism bodies and associations, to promote the region to visitors and to facilitate tourism businesses to access research, training, business advice and marketing opportunities.

All partners support this Tourism Business Toolkit website as the main information resource for local tourism businesses. The main regional visitor website www.visitnortheastengland.com is aimed at visitors to North East England, with each regional partner operating their own visitor facing websites as well.

Check out Key Facts and Figures about tourism in the North East.

Our regional tourism partners (Area Tourism Partnerships)

Visit County Durham is an independent company limited by guarantee. It has a Chair, Board members and a Chief Executive and works in partnership with local businesses to raise the profile of County Durham as a world-class destination.

Northumberland Tourism is a limited company with a public/private sector Board. Their aim is to promote a truly compelling Northumberland ‘brand’ working in partnership with tourism businesses to establish the region as England’s premier rural tourism destination.

NewcastleGateshead Initiative is the destination marketing agency for NewcastleGateshead, promoting NewcastleGateshead as a world-class place to live, learn, work and visit. We aim to position and promote NewcastleGateshead as a leading European destination for leisure and business visitors.

Created in 2000 by Newcastle City Council and Gateshead Council as a publicly and privately funded business, NewcastleGateshead Initiative has developed a strong brand for the area - promoting it nationally and internationally as a place at the forefront of innovative culture-led regeneration.

Tees Valley Unlimited is a partnership of public, private and voluntary bodies which coordinates activities, appropriate to a city region level, designed to improve the economic performance of the entire Tees Valley. TVU continues to support tourism across the five boroughs within Tees Valley by working in partnership with tourism businesses, stakeholders, national and sub-regional agencies, tourism industry associations and local authorities on the ongoing promotion and development of the area

Our national and international tourism partners

VisitBritain and VisitEngland undertake partnership and marketing activities that promote the region to markets around the world, including the UK itself.
