Accessibility

How accessible is your business?

Are you embracing accessibility for all?

There are approximately 2.7 million potential visitors with disabilities in the UK who regularly travel, and millions more abroad, who have a huge spending potential. Taking steps to be more accessible shows that, as a tourism business, you are aware of the importance of being 'open to all'.

Accessibility is about being aware of what visitors need - from the elderly couple who struggle with steps and the family juggling children and luggage, to the single traveller with hearing difficulties and the visitor suffering from allergies.

10 Reasons for Making your Business more Accessible:

  • It’s a legal requirement - read about the Disability and the Equality Act 2010
  • It’s easy, and it doesn’t mean spending lots of money – only 4% of people with disabilities use a wheelchair
  • The spending power of disabled people is estimated at £80 billion
  • In the UK one in three people is disabled or is close to someone who is
  • Consumer spending of UK visitors between 50-69 is currently £300bn
  • The accessible market is an extremely loyal one
  • Disabled people shop online – 54% of disabled people consider internet access essential
  • The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are on the horizon with increased amounts of visitors expected from overseas who are used to high standards of accessibility
  • One North East provide a free online accessibility training course
  • By joining the National Accessible Scheme you will be offering an informed choice to visitors with accessibility needs

The first steps towards improved accessibility.
