  • Tourism is of enormous importance to the economy of North East England bringing in £3.9 billion and directly employing 50,000 people
  • 8.5 million people stayed overnight in the region with a further 73 million people making a day visit to the region
  • Tourism contributes 5.8% GVA (gross value added) to the North East economy
  • 46% of all direct expenditure is spent on food and drink
  • More than half of all expenditure is spent in Tyne and Wear
  • The average overnight visitor spends £169.47/Day Visitor £33.21
  • More than £380mn has been invested in tourism developments since 2004
  • There are more than 10,000 tourism businesses in the North East
  • Serviced room occupancy stood at 62%
  • The Great North Museum was the most visited attraction in 2009 with more than 640,000 visitors
